Overview
The Perse School (Singapore) is seeking a dynamic and adaptable Teacher of Biology to join our expanding Senior School, opening in August 2025. The successful candidate will play a key role in helping to establish the Science Department, initially delivering engaging lessons in Biology in Years 5 to 10, growing through to Year 11 and A Level/IB Diploma.
Ideally applicants will have the ability to teach a second scientific subject up to Key Stage 3 or beyond.
As the school grows, this role may include leadership responsibilities across the Science Faculty, providing an exciting opportunity to shape the development of science education within the Senior School. The post-holder will contribute to the delivery of the Cambridge International Science Curriculum, ensuring students are well-prepared for IGCSE Biology and related examinations.
In addition to teaching responsibilities, the successful candidate will serve as a Form Tutor, providing pastoral care and fostering students’ personal growth. They will also contribute to the school’s extracurricular programme, engaging students in science-related activities, clubs, and competitions.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver a rigorous and engaging Biology curriculum, in line with the Cambridge International Curriculum and The Perse School ethos.
- Teach Biology across age range from year 6 through to IGCSE, A Level/IB diploma, inspiring curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in students.
- Support students in preparing for IGCSE Biology, for first examination in May/June 2027, delivering a well-structured and challenging course.
- Develop and implement lesson plans, learning materials and assessments that cater to varying levels of language proficiency.
- Regularly provide formative and summative assessments to monitor students’ progress.
- Collaborate with Junior School Science teachers to ensure curriculum continuity and smooth progression from Year 5 to Year 7.
- Teach a second scientific subject (e.g., Computer Science, Chemistry or Physics) up to Key Stage 3 or 4, where applicable.
- Provide guidance and support as a Form Tutor, promoting students’ personal and social development.
- Establish positive relationships with parents, keeping them informed of their child’s progress and addressing any concerns.
- Incorporate innovative teaching strategies and technology to enhance the science learning experience.
- Create an inclusive and stimulating classroom environment, catering to diverse learning needs, including EAL learners.
- Contribute to the extracurricular programme by leading science-related clubs, STEM projects, and competitions.
- Engage in professional development and mentor colleagues to promote best practices in science education.
Person Specification
Essential Skills and Attributes
- Strong subject knowledge in Biology and effective teaching strategies to support diverse learners.
- Experience teaching Biology to students aged 11–16, with familiarity in preparing students for IGCSE or equivalent examinations.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, fostering strong relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Cultural sensitivity and awareness, with the ability to thrive in an international school setting.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage responsibilities effectively in a dynamic environment.
- Proficiency in using technology and multimedia tools to enhance science education.
- Demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate students to achieve their full potential in Biology.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Ability to teach a second scientific subject (Computer Science, Chemistry or Physics) up to Key Stage 3 or 4.
- Experience in developing curriculum frameworks or leading a team within a Science Department.
- Experience working with EAL learners, incorporating strategies to support language acquisition in science subjects.
- Familiarity with concept-based or inquiry-based learning approaches.
- Experience teaching in an international school context.
- Passion for integrating Biology into cross-curricular initiatives and STEM projects.
